Lockdowns in Georgia: Where to find locksmiths
Atlanta (CNN) Lockdowns have been a familiar sight across the country since the mid-1990s, but now, more than two decades later, locksmithing is back.
The Georgia Department of Public Safety says a new statewide lockdowns were ordered Monday and the Georgia State Police are asking residents to stay away from unlocked vehicles and other locked areas, including public libraries and schools.
The statewide lockdown is in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to Georgia Department Of Public Safety spokeswoman Alicia Williams.
“This is a statewide lock down, and we encourage everyone to stay indoors,” Williams said.
“The goal is to ensure that we do not have a large increase in vehicle thefts and break-ins, and that our police officers are ready and willing to respond to any emergencies.”
Williams said the statewide lock-down is expected to last through Wednesday.
Lockdowns are a frequent occurrence in the Southeast and other parts of the country.
In Georgia, there have been nine lockdowns since January 20, according to the department.
It is the third-most since the state began tracking the statistics in 2013.
Lockdowns were also ordered for several counties in Georgia in 2015.
Georgia has also issued more than 1,300 traffic citations since February 5.
Georgia had more traffic citations issued than any other state in the U.S. in 2015, according, the Georgia Department OF Public Safety.
In 2016, the state issued more traffic tickets than any state.
Georgia also has more than 30 percent of its residents under the age of 18, the department reported.
Georgia had more than 200 incidents in which an unattended car was used as a weapon or was used in a crime, according the department, and at least 3,000 incidents in 2016 that had people in cars driving while intoxicated.
There are approximately 2,300 locksmith and lockdowns in the state, Williams said, and they are located in the following locations:Burglary in Fulton, Ga., at the University of Georgia, at the Atlanta BeltLine, at Georgia State University and in the city of Athens.
Georgia is also the home of the largest locksmith company in the country, GNC, which employs more than 15,000 people, according Williams.GNC has about 1,000 locksmith employees in Georgia.
Georgia’s Department of Transportation announced a nationwide lockdown that was imposed Friday.
The department’s Lockdown Program will be in effect for five days, from 8 a.u.m.-6 a. m.
ET on Wednesday, April 16.
The lockdowns are part of a nationwide effort to cut down on the number of stolen cars and other vehicles stolen from Georgia, according Transportation Secretary Kevin Wilson.
More than 500,000 Georgia drivers are now in the car-theft business, he said.
