Busy bee thief’s arrest makes headlines around the world
Fort Wayne, Indiana – It’s been a busy bee year for one Locky Smith, who has now been arrested for stealing more than $300,000 worth of bees from the Beekeeping Company of America.
The 28-year-old Locky was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Fort Wayne on Monday, according to his Facebook page.
The bee theft came to light on June 30 when a worker reported seeing a box of bees in the parking lot of the Beekeepers Cooperative at 1340 S. Grand River Rd., in Fort Worth, Texas.
The worker said he saw a box that appeared to be empty, but he could not determine the size or the type of the box.
Locky was later charged with one count of grand theft of bees and one count each of grand larceny and aggravated battery, according a news release from the Fort Worth Police Department.
A warrant was issued for his arrest on July 4, and he was being held at the Fort Wayne jail until his next court appearance, which was scheduled for Friday, July 9.
